Portela is the majestic "Blue and White" matriarch of Rio’s carnival, holding the record for the most championship titles in history. Founded in 1923 in the neighborhood of Oswaldo Cruz (and later moving to Madureira), it is one of the pillars of modern samba, pioneered by legendary figures like Paulo da Portela.

 

The school is famous for its unwavering elegance and its iconic symbol, the Eagle, which opens every parade with its wings spread in a display of grandeur. Portela is more than just a competition powerhouse; it is a cultural sanctuary that preserves the "samba-de-terreiro" tradition and maintains a deep connection to its elders, known as the Velha Guarda.
