PORTELA 1984

One of the most iconic and beloved parades in Portela's history, "Contos de Areia" was a tribute to the three legendary founders and pillars of the school: Paulo da Portela, Caetano, and Rufino. It used the metaphor of "sand tales" (sea stories) to weave together their lives with the spiritual protection of the Orishas. 

The enredo celebrated the resilience and the vision of these men who built the "Majesty of Samba" from the ground up. It explored how their legacy is like the sand of the shore—constantly renewed by the tide of the sea (represented by the school's blue and white), ensuring that the tradition of Portela remains eternal. 

The narrative focused on the spiritual guidance of Iemanjá and Oxum, framing the school's history as a sacred journey. It was a masterpiece of storytelling and community pride, emphasizing the deep bond between the members of Portela and the ancestral figures who continue to inspire them. 

Result: 1st Place (Champion). 

Trivia: This was the first-ever championship decided at the newly inaugurated Sambadrome (Marquês de Sapucaí), making Portela the first "Grand Champion" of the official venue.
