UNIÃO DA ILHA 1982

União da Ilha arrived in 1982 with an enredo that was deceptively simple: the pure, unadulterated joy of the first day of Carnival. While other schools were focusing on complex historical figures or heavy political allegories, Ilha chose to celebrate the "Carioca" spirit. The parade followed the transformation of an everyday worker—someone who spends all year struggling—into a king or a deity for just one day, fueled by nothing but the beat of the drum and the heat of the sun. 

The visual presentation was light, airy, and incredibly colorful. It featured giant puppets, clowns, and symbols of the street carnivals of old Rio. It felt like a giant block party (bloco) had been invited onto the official stage. The floats didn't try to be imposing; they tried to be inviting. It was a theme that spoke directly to the heart of the spectator, reminding everyone that at its core, Carnival is a release valve for the soul. 

Though it didn't win the trophy, the parade won immortality. The lyrics described the sun "shining like a carpet of gold" and the "stars in the palm of my hand," capturing the hallucinogenic bliss of a perfect Carnival day. It solidified União da Ilha’s reputation as the "school of joy," a title they held for decades, proving that sometimes the most profound thing you can do is simply remind people how to be happy.

Trivia: The songwriter, Didi, wrote the lyrics in just one afternoon, never imagining that "É Hoje" would eventually be covered by artists like Ludmilla and Caetano Veloso.
