ESTÁCIO DE SÁ 1992

This enredo celebrated the 70th anniversary of the Week of Modern Art of 1922, which took place in São Paulo. It paid tribute to the pioneers of Brazilian Modernism, such as Mário de Andrade, Oswald de Andrade, and Anita Malfatti, who sought to create a uniquely Brazilian artistic identity. 

The parade was a colorful and avant-garde journey through the "Paulicéia Desvairada" (Hallucinated City), blending the urban energy of São Paulo with the revolutionary spirit of the modernists. It featured references to iconic works like "Abaporu" and the anthropophagic movement, which proposed "devouring" foreign influences to create something new. 

Estácio de Sá successfully translated intellectual concepts into a popular and vibrant spectacle. The theme highlighted how the modernist movement paved the way for the recognition of samba and popular culture as legitimate forms of Brazilian art, making it a fitting tribute for a samba school. 

Result: 1st Place (Champion). 

Trivia: This remains the only title in the Special Group for Estácio de Sá, a school widely considered the "cradle of samba."
