The 2016 enredo, "A Ópera dos Malandros" (The Opera of the Rogues), was a sophisticated and theatrical tribute to the "Malandro"—the street-smart, dandy figure of Rio’s nightlife. Inspired by the classic "Opera do Malandro" by Chico Buarque and the spiritual mythos of Zé Pilintra, the parade transformed the Sambadrome into the bohemian Lapa district of the 1930s and 40s. It explored the duality of this iconic character: a figure who survives on the fringes of society with elegance, wit, and a touch of divine protection, navigating a world of gambling dens, cabarets, and moonlight.
Visually, the school—under the artistic direction of Renato and Márcia Lage—delivered a masterclass in set design. The aesthetic was a stunning blend of Art Deco elegance and gritty urban realism, dominated by the school’s signature red and white. Floats meticulously recreated Rio landmarks, such as the Lapa Arches and the smoky interiors of old-school bars. The costumes were a standout, featuring tailored linen suits, Panama hats, and the classic bicolor shoes that define the Malandro’s "uniform," all reimagined with the sparkle and grandiosity required for a world-class carnival performance.
The parade’s energy was anchored by a legendary "Comissão de Frente" (opening act) that became an instant classic. The dancers performed a gravity-defying routine on a float designed like a street corner, using hidden mechanisms to lean at impossible angles and "float" through the air, mimicking the agile, slippery movements of a rogue escaping the law. By the time the school finished its run, it had successfully captured the "ginga" (the unique Brazilian swing) and the soul of Rio’s street culture, turning a social archetype into a grand, operatic hero of the people.

Trivia: The "Comissão de Frente" utilized a specially designed magnetic flooring system and custom shoes to allow the dancers to lean back at a 45-degree angle without falling, a visual trick that left the judges and the audience in a state of absolute disbelief.
