About

The 2009 enredo, "Tambor" (Drum), was a rhythmic odyssey that traced the history of the drum from its primal origins as a communication tool in Africa to its global status as the heartbeat of human culture.

The parade began with the sacred nature of the instrument, showing how it was used to talk to the gods and call tribes together, emphasizing the wood, the skin, and the tension required to make the instrument "speak." It was a visceral exploration of how the beat of the drum connects spirituality, communication, and celebration across all borders.

Visually, the school—led by the creative duo Renato Lage and Márcia Lage—delivered a masterclass in modern Carnival design. The floats moved through different eras, following the drum’s migration across the Atlantic into the military marches of Europe, the vibrant rhythms of the Caribbean, and the sophisticated kits of jazz and rock. Salgueiro used a striking palette that contrasted industrial, metallic textures with deep, warm woods and African-inspired patterns, creating a sophisticated visual narrative that felt both ancient and high-tech.

The emotional peak of the parade was, fittingly, the performance of the "Furiosa" (the Furious One), Salgueiro’s legendary drum section. In a moment of sheer theatrical genius, the percussionists performed a series of synchronized silences, proving that the rhythm is so powerful that even the gaps between the beats carry weight. By the time the school reached the end of the runway, it had reaffirmed the drum as the true protagonist of the Carnival, securing a victory that was as technically perfect as it was emotionally resonant.

Result: 1st Place (Champion)

Trivia: During the parade’s "recuo da bateria" (the moment the drums enter their designated niche), the master of the drums, Mestre Marcão, coordinated a revolutionary "stop" where 300 percussionists went completely silent for several seconds while the entire school continued to sing and dance in perfect synchronization.
