Estação Primeira de Mangueira is perhaps the most iconic and beloved samba school in the world, serving as a powerful symbol of Brazilian popular culture. Founded in 1928 by the legendary composer Cartola and his companions, the school is rooted in the Mangueira hill (Morro da Mangueira), one of Rio's most traditional communities.

 

Dressed in its unmistakable colors of green and pink, Mangueira is celebrated for its deep respect for tradition, famously being the only school to parade with a drum wing (Bateria Tem que Respeitar) that does not use the high-pitched repique drum, giving its rhythm a unique, heavy swing.

 

Throughout its history, "The Green and Pink" has been a pioneer in social and political commentary, often using the Sambadrome as a platform to honor marginalized heroes and challenge official versions of Brazilian history, ensuring that the voice of the people remains at the heart of the spectacle.
