União da Ilha do Governador is affectionately known as the "sweetheart" of Rio’s carnival, famous for its lightheartedness and incredibly catchy melodies. Founded in 1953 on the Ilha do Governador, the school is defined by its vibrant blue, red, and white colors and a philosophy of pure joy.

 

Unlike the schools that focus on heavy drama or dense historical epics, União da Ilha excelled during the 1970s and 80s by creating poetic, whimsical, and easy-to-sing themes—producing some of the most famous sambas-enredo in history, such as "O Amanhã" and "É Hoje."

 

This "Ilha style" prioritizes the happiness of the reveler and the spontaneity of the party over rigid technicality. Even when tackling serious subjects, the school maintains a colorful, airy aesthetic and an inviting rhythm that traditionally makes it one of the most anticipated and warmly received schools by the Sambadrome crowd.
