Império Serrano is one of the most traditional and revered institutions in the history of samba, representing the iconic neighborhood of Madureira. Founded in 1947 by a group of dissidents from a local samba block, the school quickly became a powerhouse, winning four consecutive championships in its first four years—a record that still stands today.

 

Known as the "School of the Elite of Samba," its colors of green and white are synonymous with musical excellence and structural innovation; it was the first school to introduce the double-bass drum (surdo de terceira) to the percussion section, creating the unique "Serrano swing."

 

Beyond its competitive success, Império Serrano is cherished for its poetic and socially conscious themes, as well as its anthem-like songs such as "Aquarela Brasileira," which remain timeless classics of the genre.
